Editorial Reviews

Celebrating 40 years of Rush's Permanent Waves, deemed the poignant moment the band reinvented themselves and their sound. The 3LP Deluxe Edition features original vinyl packaging with a newly designed gatefold jacket for the two discs of live bonus tracks (from the 1980 World Tour). With a 20-page booklet of reimagined artwork by original designer Hugh Syme & unreleased band archive photos. Housed in a slipcase. Features hits like "The Spirit Of Radio" and the cinematic "Jacob's Ladder".

Good, but not great. Huge missed opportunity.

Good, but not great. Huge missed opportunity.
Permanent Waves is one of my favorite albums. I bought the record as a kid, bought the CD later on, and now there is this collection. I bought this one on vinyl so that is what I am reviewing here. The new 180g version of the record sounds great. The artwork on the cardboard sleeve is matte, not glossy like the original but still looks fantastic. The inner sleeve that had the lyrics and photos on it in the original release is now double sided insert. The record itself is in a paper sleeve. That change is smart. The record is protected, you still have the lyric sheet, but don't have the old issue of the record eventually tearing through the sleeve/lyric sheet. The double album of live material is a great addition and it's always great to hear live Rush, especially since this is when they're touring Permanent Waves but moving into the Moving Pictures era. The song selection and sound of the band make this album an interesting aural sample of the band live between their classic live albums All The World's A Stage and Exit Stage Left. However, it's kind of a missed opportunity to recreate what a Rush concert would have been like at the time. It is a selection of songs from various shows on the tour, which is fine, especially since most live albums are not one concert. Most live albums are made up of performances from several shows in order to create a sort of "best performances" live album from a tour, so we're all used to that. The issue is that no attempt was made to make this feel like a live album, it's just a collection of live performances. It begins with Beneath, Between & Behind (Live in Manchester) which just starts, clearly not the begging of a show. It ends with Freewill (Live in London) which is clearly not the end of the show. Just a little bit of time at the mixing board when this 40th anniversary collection was being made could have made this feel like you were listening to a live show. If you're making a special edition for the 40th anniversary of one of your most popular albums why not do this? Or why not re-create the actual complete set list and release a live album to recreate Permanent Waves era Rush concert? Not making it feel like a real live album seems lazy.As for the book... it's a booklet. Most bands release amazing hard cover books to go along with these anniversary special additions. This was nothing super exciting. You'll flip through it when you first get it. Maybe a time or two after that. There's nothing here to sit down and spend more than a few minutes with. When you see the boxed sets that bands like The Who and others put out for anniversary editions they come with a hard cover book filled with pictures from the era, reproductions of reviews of live performances, and sometimes images of alternate album cover ideas, essays or interviews with band members from the time the album was originally released and from now. This has none of those things. None. It was really disappointing.Which brings me to my final issue. This is NOT a boxed set. This is a couple of records in a flimsy cardboard slip case. You can make the argument that nothing in the marketing of this says it's a boxed set, but when you see the price (of the vinyl in particularly), who didn't think the wasn't a 40th Anniversary Boxed set? Isn't that what you thought this was? I know I did. Most expensive vinyl sets come with a download code so that you can listen on an iPod, your phone, or however you listen to your digital music. This collection does NOT come with a digital download. For the money it should.Luckily if you buy from Amazon you get "Auto-rip" which provides you with a digital download to go along with your records. If you plan to buy this set on vinyl buy it from Amazon, at least with them providing the digital download you get more for your money.Overall I recommend the music here for any fan of Rush and Permanent Waves, but I don't know that I'd recommend the Vinyl. It's probably a better deal to buy the CD. It's cheaper, you get all of the music, the flimsy cardboard slip case won't seem unusual, a little booklet is normal, and you can rip it into your computer from your discs (although you still get Auto-rip on the CD from Amazon). If you want the booklet, want to see the new cover and are a real Rush fan, the CD version is probably the best value for the money.

Lo he comprado para regalo de Navidad, que mi novio es fan de Rush. Destaco que venía muy bien protegido (una caja de cartón dentro de otra) , así que ha llegado en perfecto estado.
