A Perfect Match for a Household NAS (network attached storage)

A Perfect Match for a Household NAS (network attached storage)
I connected my RPi as a NAS by running OMV (Open Media Vault Linux) as its OS (OMV is 99% GUI. Has very little cmd-line exp needed - for those who dk).It was very easy to configure with a quick guide online and I set up the Pi, downloaded OMV directly to the Pi and had it running in 15 mins.I still had to configure OMV but that's not a long process either. I used USB 3.0 HDD cradles to hold the HDDs, and placed them under a cheap USB laptop cooler to cool both HDDs.Prior to this setup I had a WD MyCloud and this is SO much better. The WD had a great WDRed HDD, but could only xfer at speeds of about 10MB/s. With my OMV Pi, I get xfers of around 40MB/s. On the WD, itd take forever to load large amounts of video files from my IP cams. But the OMV Pi has had ZERO problems loading large amounts of files from my cameras or from files I set up on a share.Overall... I would def recommend the Pi4 to others (and have). The USB 3.0 and greater RAM (I got the 4Gb version) make the Pi4 a great little platform. I plan to buy more myself. The best part about Pi's is that I can take a diff SD card and turn the Pi into an emulator machine or a media center by simply changing OS's on diff SD cards.

This came very nicely packaged. Good instructions. Everything fit together well. The only thing I found was the opening for the fan wasn't big enough. The raspberry cutout is smaller than the fan. I just drilled a few extra holes and the airflow is much better. This is nothing to detract from the overall kit. The fan keeps everything cool and the heat sinks fit nicely both on the pi and in the case. The price is fair for what you get as well. Price everything out individually and you come out a bit higher. So getting a kit that matches everything together worked out well. I do like the power supply with the on-off switch. Nice touch.

I got this to make a Retropie and it has really worked well. I was using an older RPI 1 and boy, what a huge difference the RPI 4 makes with 4GB of RAM. I am now reliving my 8-bit childhood and 16-bit teens. I would recommend getting an additional 256GB or 512GB card. Once you start configuring and working with Retropie you'll find you'll want a lot of storage space. I learned this by working my way up which cost me a few bucks in cards (32, 64, 256 then 512 so I made all the steps.). I do keep a smaller card with raspian loaded so I can switch over to a desktop when I need to.

I finally decided to take the plunge and get a Raspberry Pi. I knew I would need a case and power supply. I saw this kit came with all that and other essentials: a MicroSD card with Noobs, a reader for that card, heat sinks and a fan and of course the specialized MicroHDMI cable the Pi 4 requires.

Setup was easy. The heat sinks and fan keep my Pi nice and cool. Everything works as advertised. Raspberry Pi computers are not like a Windows PC, so if you do decide to buy something like this be ready for a bit of a learning curve. But you’ll have a MicroSD card to start and you can use spare cards or pick up more cards for cheap on Amazon or a local electronics retailer (I got 5 for $20 on Amazon.) One card per project. And the Pi 4 is pretty new so there’s new things being developed for it all the time.

If you are new to Pi, I definitely recommend this kit. I’m using my Pi with this kit as a desktop computer, a Retro game emulator, a Kodi device, and a couple other cards I am using to build other projects (next will be a Win98 emulation machine....because why not?)

Definitely a way to geek out on the cheap and do a lot of cool things. If you want to know what else you can do with the Pi, this kit, and other kits out there, check out raspberrypi.org

You'll need a second micro HDMI adapter to use this with dual monitors. It's easiest to start off with one monitor connected to the HDMI port next to the power connector.

The case is the weak part of this kit. Mine wasn't very clear, mostly smoky. The fan suffers with the only holes available in the shape of the raspberry. It really needs some vent slots.

The power switch on the USB is a hard shutoff. It does save insertions on the USB C connector.

I'm using this with Klipper firmware on an Ender 3. I run Octoprint with The Spaghetti Detective and have no issues. I love being able to use 5Ghz Wi Fi, the only real benefit this gives over a Pi3. Also, it's likely going to be handy for future projects.

Faced with the unavailable bare board or this kit, it's an obvious choice. It's hard to put all the bits together as Canakit has at this price. I would definitely recommend this for a gift or a student.

This is a great product. Easy to assemble and use with a wireless keyboard. I actually bought a small mini keyboard that is no bigger than a remote. I've use the Raspberry to surf the internet and stream television and movies from Netflick and Hulu on my tv. It works great! Simply a small computer using the television as a monitor. I'v had it over a year and have had no problems with it yet. I've saved a ton of money by simply cutting the cable TV and watching my shows online.

The additional memory and the higher resolution was the main reason I purchased this unit. It was also supposed to be able to support 4k.. So far I have not been able to get the resolution to go higher than the 1080p. To begin with it would only do 1024x768 on my Samsung 4k TV, after finding one setting I was finally able to get it to 1080p, but still can't get it to go above that.

I also experienced some video tearing while playing YouTube videos on the 1080p resolution in full screen mode, so not sure the 4k side will be able to handle full screen 4k Video.

Other than the video issues, everything else works well, was able to hook it up to both a wired and wireless network and update and download packages on the Raspbian installation. I have not stress tested it, but the kit did have a fan that I hooked on as well as the heat sinks. So it should stay cool.

Came working out of the box. Had to buy an hdmi to vga adapter for it to work but this is not their fault. Cool looking clear case but the fan is mostly blocked as the holes are too little. Subsequent runs of this box might want to make the holes bigger and actually fit the fan. Or get rid of the holes and just leave it open. My first pi. Cool.

Bought the P14/4GB to replace PC which failed due to Mother board problem. Im used to Linux so found it no problem to set up and use the Debian software. Good performance and easily runs videos and LibreOffice.
Good option if you are willing to manipulate the technicals.
