About Us
Driving dynamics is our passion: Realizing the perfect driving behavior, building the perfect shock absorber – that is the motivation that drives us. Every day. And we have been doing so for around 70 years. Even then, we knew that tomorrow’s driving experience counts more than yesterday’s performance. And that the next innovation is always more important than the last. That’s why we know only one claim: We shape the present and future of chassis engineering.

I would highly recommend replacing the factory bolts and nuts with new ones, regardless of visual condition, as the factory nuts are of the self-locking variety and thus not designed for reuse.
Regarding performance, the factory shocks on the F-150 are not ideal and in some cases potentially dangerous. This is especially noteworthy when hauling near the payload capacity, towing heavy loads, or when the rear suspension encounters some type of shock that needs to be damped (An example of which would be how the rear end gets loose driving over speed humps or railroad tracks).
These shocks greatly improve the rear end stability of the vehicle, and handling is much more predictable and improved in all of the aforementioned scenarios. And while shocks are not an adequate replacement for an anti-roll bar, they do improve cornering stability in a noteworthy manner.
While the shocks improve handling performance, they do impact the ride quality SLIGHTLY. Whether this is perceived as a negative or positive impact is likely down to the preferences of the person driving the vehicle, but it does result in the rear suspension feeling a little less like a cloud (Vibrations are damped faster than stock), and slightly more firm. Again, this difference is noticeable but not significant. At the end of the day, the truck still will still ride like a high-quality truck. We're just talking about a shock absorber change, so don't expect a small change to cause the truck to feel like it now has independent rear suspension.
Overall, In my opinion, these shocks are one of the best upgrades for the money that you can make to your Ford truck as long as you know what to expect out of them. And you can install them with simple hand tools in your driveway in a couple of minutes.
When I pulled off the factory shocks, I tested them for compression and rebound...much worse than the 5100's. The factory shocks had some gas in them, but not much. Also, the travel was not smooth like the 5100's. After compressing them a few times, I was not surprised why the rear end was so twitchy from the factory. I can't speak to the longevity of the 5100's, but my initial impression is that they are definitely worth the $150 investment.
Installation took about 30 minutes. No need to jack up the truck, install can be performed with truck at ride height on the ground. A couple of metric wrenches, a torque wrench, a small pry bar, and blue LocTite is all you need to change the 2 rear shocks. Torque spec for my truck was 66 ft. pd. for both top and bottom bolts. The upper nut on the drivers side was a little weird. It had no place for a wrench...instead it has a large tab welded on that hit the frame and kept it from spinning when I loosened the bolt...whatever works, not sure why Ford decided to do this on 1 of 4 nuts.
UPDATE: Have been driving on these 2 rear Bilstein's for about 3 weeks now. It seems to me that they are "breaking in" a bit. Ride seems even better than when I first installed them. Almost makes me sad that I don't have the money to replace the front shocks as they feel like garbage compared to the rears. Bumps are no longer something I try to avoid...just plow right on through! I put these on a 24 month lease truck and I think it was $150 well spent.
UPDATE: Moved these 5100's to a 2019 F150 with no issues. Been driving on them for over 10,000 miles so far between 2 trucks with zero problems. At my next lease change, I expect to move them again. Great investment!
