2014 release second visit to the dynamic South Louisiana R&B scene. Ace has added the work of another Louisiana record man, Sam Montel from Baton Rouge, to the vast stockpile of material in the vaults of J.D. Miller, Eddie Shuler, Floyd Soileau & Jake Graffagnino. In addition to the talents of the lead vocalists, the backing musicians on many of the tracks are also very accomplished. Guitar Gable is heard on many titles, as is Katie Webster on piano, sax giant Lionel Torrance, drummers Jockey Etienne and Warren Storm and Lazy Lester, who would play whatever instrument was asked of him; all are featured on many of the Crowley recordings. Classie Ballou's band was used often at Goldband, while the Upsetters, Little Richard's former outfit, can be heard on Lester Robertson's tracks. If you have rhythm in your bones and a love of the raw and rockin' then this compilation will transport your spirit to a Louisiana juke joint.

These cuts stem from recordings made during the early 50s in Louisianna. There is a mixture here of cajun, bop and blues from some artists that are relatively unknown and others that you may have never heard of. These recordings are crude made with the barest of necessities in studios found above garages or basements. These recordings, although interesting from a historical standpoint, are for the completists among you of Louisianna music.

I love R&B and Blues and Soul music, so I thought I would like this, but I didn't. I can get the gritty, raw mood thing, but it doesn't go far beyond the basic country blues pattern. Not very challenging music. It gets repetitive after a while. I generally love Ace products but this one didn't cut it for me.

*印の付いたものは未発表曲・テイクを示す。相変わらず無名どころも多いが未発表録音の発掘を含め内容は素晴らしい。「ユール・ルーズ・ア・グッド・シング」や「オー・ベイビー（ウィー・ガット・ア・グッド・シング・ゴーイン）」等で知られるバーバラ・リンの5と21はなんと彼女の処女録音で、エディ・シュラーのゴールドバンド・レーベルに録音されていたがお蔵入りになっていたもの。エルヴィス・プレスリーのカヴァーもあるスマイリー・ルイスの「ワン・ナイト」とサム・クックの「ラヴ・ユー・モースト・オブ・オール」は抜群とまではいかないが初々しい歌唱が聴けるだけで貴重だ。この録音を含め初期の彼女の契約の面倒をみてやっていたのがルイジアナのギター奏者・歌手のクラレンス・ガーロウである。1は「シック・アンド・タイアード」や「アイ・ライク・イット・ライク・ザット」のニューオーリンズR&Bヒットを持つ歌手クリス・ケナーの最初のレコードで、ピアノのヒューイ・スミスのバンドがバック。8と14のスマイリン・ジョーは別の芸名カズン・ジョーの方がよく知られた歌手で僕は昔から好きな人だ。ブルージーな8もミディアムの14も彼の自作曲で、初期のニューオーリンズR&Bの良さが味わえる。10のリロイ・ワシントンは早世したギター奏者・歌手で録音は少ないが、本シリーズでも何枚かで登場している。彼の代表作10「ワイルド・チェリー」を聴けば分かるように、ルイジアナの他のブルーズ・ギタリストにはないモダンなスタイルのギターが彼の特色だ。この10はシングルとは違う別テイク。車のフォードV型8気筒を歌った24「フォードV-8」のハニー・ボーイ・アレンは、ジェイ・ミラーのスタジオで数曲録音したがすべて当時は未発表に終わった。それくらいしか分かっていないが、クレジットはないもののここで聴かれるギターは正に先述のリロイ・ワシントンに違いない。ご機嫌なアップ・テンポの曲。未発表録音となっているが、英国フライライト・レーベルから出たオムニバス盤LP "All Night Long" 収録と同じものではなかろうか。彼の録音は未発表だった "I'm A Real Lover Baby" が同じくAceから2013年発表のCD "Bluesin' By The Bayou" で発掘されているが、ダウンホームなそちらの曲ではワシントンらしきギターは聴かれない。18のビッグ・ウォルター・プライスは「サンダーバード」のニックネームで知られるが、ブルーズ・ファンなら英国フライライトのオムニバス盤LP "Houston Ghetto Blues" に二曲入っていた音質の悪いライヴ録音を思い起こすのでは。そこでは当時無名だったアルバート・コリンズの超強力なギターが聴けたのだから。但しこの18はプライスのピアノ弾き語りでやや凡庸な出来。そのほかにも面白い曲が多く今後もこのシリーズに期待したい。
