Programming and Operation of your Timer. Daytime Setting: Tabs down to control daytime lamp plugged into top outlet Nighttime Setting: Tabs up to control nighttime lamp or heater plugged into bottom outlet Setting the Time of Day: The arrow on the face of the timer indicates the time of day. To set the time, rotate the dial until the arrow is pointing at the correct time. This timer will only operate when plugged in. In the event of a power outage, the time of day will need to be reset. Program the Timer: To program the Daytime setting; push the black tabs down adjacent to the times that you would like the daytime lamp to be on. Each tab represents 30 minutes. To program the Nighttime setting; pull the black tabs up adjacent to the times that you would like the nighttime lamp to be on. Set the Red Bypass Switch to Timer: To enable the day/night timer function, be sure to slide the red switch on the side of the timer down toward the timer icon. To bypass the timer and manually turn on the daytime lamp, slide the switch up to the “On” setting. Push it back down to the timer setting to resume normal timer function. Not for Use with Aquatic Habitats: Plug the Timer Into a Ground GFCI Outlet: To reduce the risk of electric shock, this timer has a three-prong plug and must be plugged into a grounded three-prong receptacle. If using this timer near aquatic habitats, the receptacle must also be GFCI protected. If you are unsure about the electrical supply and connection, contact a qualified licensed electrician Drip Loop: If using near an aquatic habitat, the appliances plugged into this timer must incorporate a drip-loop. The drip loop will prevent water from running along the power cords and getting the timer outlet or wall receptacle wet. To create a drip loop, be sure that a portion of each power cord is lower than the level of the wall receptacle wet. If for an reason the plug or wall receptacle gets wet, do not grasp or unplug the power cord until after the power has been switched off at the main fuse or circuit breaker.

I bought this because I work late shifts, sleep in, and go out of town, so often times I can't turn on my leopard gecko's heat lamp when I need too. I needed something simple that would work while I was away. I got this right before I headed to work and was excited to test it out. I followed the instructions and set it up with the time I wanted and the time of day, and headed to work. I was hopeful after reading so many positive reviews. Unfortunately, when I came home hours after the heat lamp was meant to be off, it was still burning away and I've noticed it taking a toll on my leo. I'm so disappointed, I had such high hopes that this would be my savior during those late night shifts, but I'm back to square one.

Tried for two nights before throwing in the trash. It kept sticking at different times and not progressing through to turn on in the morning. I would be getting ready for work and notice my heat emitter was still on and basking light off at 7:45. So I look at the timer and it says it’s 11:30 pm. I corrected it for two nights thinking maybe I did something wrong. I twisted to make sure it had no obstructions, then set it back to whatever the current time was. The day and night times were not the problem. It was simply not continuing to turn and keep proper time. It’s the price of a few energy drinks, so I didn’t waste my time trying to get a refund. Not saying they’re all crap. Plenty of people have no problem with theirs. But at this price you know they’re made cheaply. It’s just a chance you take. Went back on amazon and ordered a more expensive digital day/night timer. Lesson learned. 😉

The timer itself is working great. I use it for my veiled chameleon. I have my 2 day lamps on an extension cord plugged into "day". Had it for a while and so far it's been working pretty well.
Some reviews are saying the timer is noisy, but mine is not making any sound. It is in my bedroom so I can tell.
It took me some time to figure out you have to PULL on the black tabs.
Great timer otherwise.

For example, I can run my non-programmable wave maker and main lights on the 'day' cycle and then have a much dimmer light running on a the 'night' cycle.

Do note that this timer has a maximum rating of 15A resistant and 8A tungsten. I'm hooking up a few small things to mine so for me it doesn't matter.
