Lasted almost 7 years!
I love this toothbrush! I've dropped it multiple times at knee height (I leave it on my tub and brush as I wait for the shower to get hot). Haven't had a new cavity or for the small existing cavity to get worse since using this. My only complaint is after almost 7 years I don't know why there's a hole at the base. My toothbrush "charges" as in it lights up while on the charge base but the moment I press the button to use it nothing happens but I'm fairly certain that hole means the battery isn't holding a charge. I wish there was a way to replace the battery and base because this toothbrush has been solid for me over the years.

This is simply the best toothbrush on the market. Not only does it clean and whiten your teeth the best of any other manual or electric toothbrush, it is probably the most high-tech device that a person can stick into their face, and it even changed how I brush my teeth by promoting. This is a must-buy for any tech-centric gadget head who cares about oral health and hygeine. I never brushed my teeth regularly before this brush. In fact, I can say with honesty that even three times a month would be giving myself too much credit. Disgusting, I know. But then one day a month or so ago, part of a tooth got chipped off because of a large cavity so I went to the dentist to get it fixed and afterwards, resolved to try a hardcore toothbrush to see if that would make a difference. I did some research and after trying out the Sonciare HealthyWhite, which is also a great toothbrush for people who don't want to spend so much, I decided to purchase the Sonicare DiamondClean.

When the product arrived, I immediately opened it to find a very attractive toothbrush and many accessories. This is literally a high-tech swiss army knife for your teeth. The handle of the brush itself is made of a faux-ceramic material that feels great in the hand, and even though it doesn't have the ridges or rubber grip of other Sonicare brushes, it will never slip or slide out of your hand. The DiamondClean brush heads are also very nice and professional looking. The brush handle is ceramic white on the body and chrome on the bottom, where it touches the inductive charger. There is one power/mode button on the handle that cycles through the various modes (of which there are five), and each mode has an illuminated display that lights up a soft white color when that mode is selected and active. There is also a battery/charge indicator on the front near the bottom that lets you know when you're running low on battery, when the brush is in use, and when it's charging. One note: the bottom of the handle, where it stands on the charger, doesn't have the hole that the little nub of the charger fits into to keep it stable. It is kind of concave and stands on the included chargers, which surround the bottom portion of the handle, preventing it from falling over.

The DiamondClean includes two brush heads in the package, one standard size and one compact. I have yet to use the compact one but it looks like it would be just as effective as the standard size, but a bit smaller. Changing from using (rarely) a manual toothbrush to the HealthyWhite was a huge difference, and from the HW to the DiamondClean brush heads made a huge difference. You can feel it immediately. The bristles on the outer edges of the brushing surface of the DiamondClean head are white and blue (blue being the indicator bristles that tell you that you should replace the head when they fade to white) and are arranged in sort of a concave almond shape around the center bristles. The center bristles are the special part of this brush head. They are the green ones in the middle, which appear to be both thinner and more fine than the outside white/blue bristles and are also more densely packed. This is where the real cleaning action happens. These bristles are arranged in a semi-geometrical orientation that really scrubs and cleans your teeth. Also of note, these brush heads can fit on the HealthyWhite and most likely some other Sonicare brush handles, but not the Essence.

The brush comes with several different charging options, and this is where the techies should pay attention. For regular use in your home bathroom, there is a charging plate that plugs into your wall with the standard 2-prong power socket, and you can put the included clear plastic charging stand on the plate which is a good looking charging option, and is what I use. The other home charging option is to use the included charging glass, which also fits on top of the charging plate (you can put either the charging stand or the glass onto the charging plate), and allows you to sit your toothbrush in a glass as many people do, and charge it at the same time. I prefer the charging stand because it is more compact and clean looking and keeps the tooth brush standing up straight, matching my other dental tools, instead of leaning against the large glass.

The final charging option is also one of the coolest accessories that comes with the brush, and that is the charging travel case. This case is made of a white cloth/synthetic weave on the outside and some sort of green plastic on the inside. There is room for two extra brush heads that fit snugly into their designated areas and space for the toothbrush handle next to that. This case also uses the inductive charging method, so all you have to do is place the handle into the form-fitting slot for it and it will charge when you plug it in, and plugging it in is the fun part. This charging travel case is powered by USB and has a mini-USB port on the end so you can plug it in to charge from a USB port on your laptop or by using the included USB power adapter and cable. Very cool!

One of the special features this brush offers is the gentle-on feature, which, for new Sonicare users, starts the brush on first use on a low-power mode, gently increasing the power over the next 14 uses to gradually and gently acclimate the user's mouth to the sensation of using a Sonicare. I guess this is here because some people feel that the toothbrush is too strong when they use it the first time and the sensation is somewhat ticklish, but I didn't require that. If you've previously used a Sonicare toothbrush or don't mind the new super-clean sensation, you can disable this feature like I did by placing the handle of the brush into whichever charging source you choose to use, and pressing and holding the power/mode button down for a few seconds until it beeps. This means that now, whenever you use the brush even if it is the first time, it will always operate at full 100% power. You can turn the gentle-on mode again by repeating the steps: placing the handle on the charger and holding the button for another few seconds until it beeps twice. Another feature is the quadpacer, which tells you how long to brush each quadrant of your teeth. It is recommended that you brush for a full two minutes, so the quadpacer splits that up into 30 seconds of brushing for each quadrant. When you turn it on, after 30 seconds the toothbrush will beep and pause for a second, which indicates that you should move on to the next part of your mouth. Most of the modes work this way, The way I do it is I brush the outside-upper teeth first, then the inside-upper, then outside lower followed by inside lower. However, since my teeth were very badly stained, I use three different modes/cycles every time I brush my teeth. I start out with the standard power Clean mode that goes for two minutes in 4 intervals, then move on to White mode, which is higher powered than Clean mode, which goes on for two minutes in 4 intervals plus another 30 seconds of an even higher powered brushing in 2 intervals for your "glamour" teeth, or front teeth, top and bottom, followed by the Polish mode, which is the strongest and highest-powered mode the toothbrush offers, giving you 30 seconds each for your top front teeth and lower front teeth. I'm sure some of it is redundant but I still like to use all three modes one after the other to feel cleaner. There are also two additional modes that the toothbrush offers. After Polish is Gum Care, which massages your gums and stimulates the blood flow there and helps to reverse and prevent gingivitis, and after Gum Care, the final mode is Sensitive, which speaks for itself. It is a lower-power mode that you should use if your teeth or gums are sensitive and you feel discomfort using the other more powerful modes. Now if Sensitive mode is any worse than the other modes in terms of cleaning power, it doesn't show or the difference is absolutely minimal. It still cleans and whitens just as well as the other modes, but does so without being uncomfortable.

Now as I mentioned above, I had a serious problem when it came to brushing regularly, but in the month since I've had the DiamondClean, I brush three times a day, every single day, without fail. I don't know if other people who had brushing problems have experienced the same thing, but this has made a huge difference for me. Not only are my teeth visibly white (they used to be quite yellow), they feel incredibly clean and fresh after brushing with the Sonicare Diamondclean, which no manual toothbrush can ever replicate. Just for the record, I also use the Sonciare Airfloss since I got this, which is a great device to use before brushing your teeth.

Update: I have been using this brush for just over a month and my teeth are more than 5 shades whiter. I have actually gotten compliments and am greeted with surprise every time I smile because my teeth were noticeably yellow before and you could see that a mile away. Now my pearly whites are really pearly white and people are astounded and don't believe that a toothbrush could make such a huge difference. I mean the difference is literally night and day. I'm hooked to my Sonicare DiamondClean now. If your teeth need to be whitened, this is the way to go. Just in case anybody was wondering, I use
Crest 3d White Vivid Anticavity Teeth Whitening Radiant Mint Toothpaste 5.8oz, Twin Pack 11.6 Oz Total  with this brush and rinse out with  Crest 3d White Arctic Fresh Rinse 32 Fl Oz  mouthwash after brushing.

Let's just get this out of the way right up front: this latest incarnation of the Philips Sonicare toothbrush is quite pricey. And, yes, you are probably paying a fair percentage of that price towards the unit's stylistic design. But this latest model comes with a number of nice accessories that work with the brush to make you understand the higher price for the unit, and therefore, possibly make it a good choice if you are looking for a new toothbrush.

The toothbrush itself is gorgeous. It stands apart from all Philip's previous designs (and yes, I've used virtually every one of them over the years) due to its "high-tech" visual appearance. Gone, for example, are the yucky gaps on the front control panel that, over time, collect toothpaste, water buildup, and so on, and become impossible to clean and unpleasant to look at. This new model has more of a uni-body shell that contains a gap only around the power button itself. The texture of the white finish (you can also purchase the toothbrush in all black, by the way) feels somewhat like unglazed ceramic: it not only looks wonderful, but it feels great in the hand.

Operation is quite similar to all the previous Philips models, with available "cleaning," "gum health," "whitening," etc. modes. A nice touch is the default initial setting that, over the course of the first 14 operations, slowly ramps up the power to acclimate those who have never used this type of brush in developing a comfort with the high frequency vibration feeling (this ramp-up in vibration power can be disabled, as well; check the manual for the two-step process to do so). A stronger, sequenced vibration while brushing alerts you to switch to the next quarter of your mouth so that you will get equal coverage for all teeth during each brushing session. The battery is listed as a three week duration, assuming normal use. My previous Sonicare brushes generally lasted this same length, and this model has proved.

The device comes with a number of very snazzy accessories. First, a wide-mouthed, heavy glass cup (yes, it is actually made of glass, not plastic) sits on top of the charging base. You simply place your toothbrush into the glass for charging. When not charging, the glass cup can sit on the counter and continue to serve as a decorative toothbrush holder. (The charger, by the way, is universal voltage, so it can be used in Europe, as well as North America.) This is one of the most obvious fancy item on the accessories list, but it does not stop there.

There is also an acrylic stand which can also be placed on top of the charger, in case you prefer not to use the glass cup. And the supplied case is much more exotic than we've seen before with other electric toothbrushes. On the end of the case is a USB port, and inside, a induction charging panel. Yes, you guessed it: during travel, you can place the toothbrush into the case, close the case, and then plug it into an USB port, and the toothbrush will charge while sitting in the case! Nice touch. And, a supplied USB adapter that plugs into the AC socket (the adapter is also universal voltage, so it works both in North America and Europe, and is much smaller and lighter than the main charger) can also be used to charge the toothbrush while it is in the case (and the USB adapter is supplied, along with a USB cable, in addition to a normal a/c charger. Finally, two different types of heads are provided to get you started (each head lasts approximately six months).

So, this is a very gorgeous and somewhat unusual toothbrush, and it has won at least two separate design awards. Once you look it over in person, you'll see why. I've used both the Braun and Philips types for years, but I have to say this Philips model is the best one I've used yet. Get it when there is a coupon or sale available, and that will help with the price. Five stars.

Pluses:
+ Beautiful design
+ Gapless brush head design (except for power button) greatly reduces chances for build-up over time
+ USB and a/c charging (convertors and cables are provided for each)
+ a/c charging is universal voltage (110-240V), so you can use it in Europe
+ USB charging can be accomplished either by using supplied plug-in USB a/c convertor or by plugging USB cable into a computer's USB port
+ Travel case has built-in USB port so charging can occur while brush is sitting inside travel case
+ Ceramic-like finish to brush handle
+ Power button has a deeply curved design that is easy to use (no fumbling with finding and properly pressing a button to get the brush to turn off)
+ Three-week use period before charging is needed
+ Lovely glass cup holder adds a touch of class (and functionality) to a mundane device
+ Secondary acrylic stand if the cup is being washed (it is top dishwater safe), or is not your "cup of tea"
+ Available in white and black
+ Light appears when charging necessary
+ Options backlighting done via LED, making display very bright, but also using less electricity
+ Gorgeous travel case that doubles as an in-case charger when connected to the USB cable
+ Handles a wide range of Philips brush heads, including the diamond clean, sensitive, deep clean, and other models
+ Long two-year warranty, and if you register the toothbrush online, the warranty is extended to two and one-half years (!)

Minuses
- Pricey (buy it when it goes on sale, or find a Philips coupon)
- Handle is ALMOST totally gapless: a gap appears around the power button (but all the other troublesome gaps from previous models are now gone)
- Some body squeaking at certain angles and pressures (caused by the high frequency vibration that these devices use, but this could be improved)
- Battery level light appears only when you need to recharge, so you can't tell how soon that time will be coming up (i.e., no three-light power level indicator)
- Travel case, while lovely, doesn't appear that it will stand up well to cleaning, due to its heavily textured outer case (but will only know this over time)

Note:
If you register the device online, Philips will supply you with an extra six months of warranty, adding up to two and a half years. Not bad!
