"rumba" is a "misnomer". (On the other hand, Putamayo has its own Rumba album, is that a misnomer too?) There is the Mambo #5 which was popular enough to appear in both Hal Leonard Latin collections: The Big Book of Latin American Songa and Jazz Latina. All the pieces have an instrumental accompaniment: Ostinatos, counterpoint, and varied instrumental solos are featured.
This album features bold accents. great trumpet solos, high energy counterpoint, and propulsive rhythm.
Some highlights include the Celtic non tempered tuning in Esperanza (Hope) and Careza Rosa (Pink Cherry) which is a "mambo version" of "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White" . Rather than hear it
as a mambo, I hear it as a kind of Latin nostalgia anthem which seems oddly familiar. The most
familiar piece is the Mambo #5 which takes the usual mambo symcopation and transforms it into
something that flows naturally in body rhythm. I have a piano mambo collection from 1950 with a piece
called "Pan American Clipper". But of those two pieces it is only Mambo #5 that actually gets in the air.
