I bought this, except the one with cherry shelves. The description of it warns that it is hard to put together and recommends paying extra for professional assembly. I found this warning unwarranted. I am a 75 year old klutz with lots of health challenges. Usually, screwing in a light bulb represents the outer limit of my technical ability, and I found this fairly easy to assemble. It was difficult in the sense that it took several hours, and was boring, but the skill level required was fairly low. All you really need is a couple of simple tools (I had to go to Lowe's to get a long handled Philips screwdriver for $5), and, at the end, a helper to help you turn it around. You see, you built the top shelf first, and then go down, and the casters are the last thing you put on, and then you have to get another person to help you upend it. My next door neighbor and I did that and got it done about two minutes after he walked in the door. If I can put this together, any person with two arms who isn't palsied can put it together. And, it looks great and functions extraordinarily well. Its tall, too. I am 5'8, and the top shelf is at armpit height on me.

This is a very nice A/V rack. I like the open back, that way I can easily get to equipment behind the rack. It also gives plenty of space for the cables. Putting it together you start with the top shelf upside down, then screw in by hand the poles, then add another shelf, line up the holes, screw in another set of poles, etc. This is all done by hand. Only, when the casters and bottom frame is installed, do you need a screwdriver. After that, the tower is flipped right-side up, and it's ready to go. The casters are nice, and the front two have locks. This rolls nicely, even with weight on it.

Some gripes, and things I learned while putting this together:

- After the first few shelves, it's nice to have help. Someone to hold a shelf and pole in alignment, so you can screw the next shelf's pole into place. Trying to do this alone, it's possible, but there were a few were difficult to line up and thread at the same time. This led me to apply a bit to much downward pressure, and that led to a few surface scratches on the shelf near the poles, which I only noticed after the tower was right-side up.

- The Cherry is a nice color. it's a dark cherry, not bright. I like that. Just keep in mind, this Cherry, it's a decal of sorts. A good, quality decal, but not a veneer. This scratches pretty easy. if you are loading something heavy onto the rack, I suggest loading from the rear of the tower, so if you lose your grip, drag a foot a bit, whatever, the surface scratch is just at the back of the tower.

- When it comes to scratches, I didn't know how sensitive it was to scratches, and though I built this on a carpet, I was not too careful. I got a few scratches on the top shelf. I suggest building this tower on a soft towel, since it will shift a bit while being built, and also while being tipped right-side up.

A few tips:

- If you get a few scratches, white marks, in the Cherry, like I did, I found a brown extra fine sharpie did a great job masking it, as long as I buffed the spot a bit, before the ink totally dried.

- VTI offers a 13" inch set of poles. You can order the set of 13" poles direct from VTI if you already have the tower, or, before you place your order, e-mail VTI and ask how and where you can order a tower with a set of "13 inch poles replacing one of the other sets of poles on this rack. Myself, I swapped out a set of 7" inch poles, for a set of 13" inch poles, and paid the extra difference. There is an extra charge if you want to make the swap. I ended up with this same tower, only 6" inches taller. It has a 13" shelf, 11" shelf, 9" shelf, and two 7" shelves.

I've not had this tower too long, but so far, so good.

Well made, a solid rack with wheels. It doesn't look out of place in the living room (cherry and black). Six shelves is not to many, there are plenty of uses if your a stereo, sound system buff. If you use a mixer you will probably want it on the top self, however I'm 6' and I would not want the top shelf any higher. It is working very well for my needs, very functional and mobile.

During the course of buying products to serve specific Purposes , you stumble upon certain ones that stand out . This VTI Audio Rack (I have the 406 Model), is such a Product. It very well made, Good Looking , and easy to assemble (at 69 Years old with Arthritis in lots of my joints and back , as another poster said , did it myself),. This unit exudes Quality. The shelves are very well finished, the bottom roller casters are solid and so useful. I recommend it as it serves stacking and connecting the Audio equipment to a Tee.
The only minor complaint - VTI should have installed a vinyl or rubber gasket on the edges of the poles that connect and stack the shelves. A real Plus is the casters on the bottom of the rack. The front ones Lock. So you are very easily able to unlock them, and move the rack in order to access the rear of your equipment. The cable management in essence. is a pre-drilled hole in the rear of the shelves that allows you amble room to feed the multitude of wires and power cords. It is open on all side, so it may not be suitable for environments where you don't wnt to see wires. But for my new "Basement Studio" pseudo - home office & music center, this unit is great.
