The printer prints relatively fast, it takes a few moments (about 3 seconds) after you send the document for it to wake up, and then it starts printing and takes about a second or two for normal pages (one page) (simple text document). It is easy to send the print jobs as two sided, since the printer puts the first page out, and then sucks it back in and prints the back, really quick! For printing I am very happy with it, the pages look good and it is relatively fast!
THe printer was easy to install and put together, when setting it up, it shows videos of what to do when you turn it on, and all you have to install is the two sided printing item in the back, the ink cartridges, and paper. It will print out your instructions for ePrint. I set up a static IP address to give access to my network across all devices, and also set up a reservation for it on my router (DHCP reservation), to ensure that the router does not try to give that IP to some other device. Since the item connects to the internet for ePrint, I gave it the Google's DNS server. I used the HP CD to install it on my Windows 7 machine (full software), which was easy to accomplish (since Windows Update did not seem to find a driver for it. I downloaded the driver only version from HP for my Win 7 Virtual Machine, since I do not need extra capabilities in the VM. I used the System Preference Printer Option to install it for Mac (Mac OS X 10.7) which found the drivers and installed the Printer and scan functionality, the Mac also recognized that it had two sided capabilities. All my computers had no problem getting the printer installed and working, if you are having trouble I recommend a DHCP reservation (get the wireless MAC address if you are using wireless -- wired and wireless cards have different MAC addresses even in the same device), and then a Static IP address, and do not forget about DNS (for ePrint), if you are unsure use Google's DNS server.
The copier works great and allows for two sided copying at the machine, the touch screen and buttons are easy to use (you have to apply a little pressure but not much (more than an iPhone). It automatically recognizes items in the ADF and allows for easy copying.
You can scan from the HP software (Windows) or from the Mac scan utility, or the iPhone HP app, scanning works great and supports scan from ADF and glass (even on iPhone >> go to Settings to choose on App).
I have not tried the Fax, since I do not have a fax line (or a phone line), so I can not provide much information on this, but a fax machine is pretty normal on most devices.
My iPhone recognized the printer instantly and I was able to use AirPrint to print from any app that supports printing (Like Mail and Safari) with no problem and can even choose to print two sided on the iPhone. I set up ePrint and was created an email address for my printer, and set it up to only print from email addresses that I own. The apps are pretty cool and the recipes and crosswords print good quality and are useful, however, I do not use the subscription service (where it prints automatically on certain days). However, you can just print the once from the app without having to subscribe, you can use the ePrint center website to customize your apps and order and subscriptions. Extremely easy to use.
In the end I am extremely happy with this printer, it offers everything I need and I hope that the HP Ink yields approximately as many papers as it claims, if so that will save me a lot of money!!!
I also wanted to add that the Fax number lights stay on all the time (even when asleep), I am assuming this could be from the recent Software Update the printer had, maybe they will fix this... However, it is not a big problem, and it could be in response of many thinking the machine did not work since they did not light up originally.
I placed card stock (110 lbs weight) on top of the paper already in the printer and printed one page (from Mac), and the printer would not grab the paper, it would just say out out paper. However, I reprinted it and told it (Mac printer Options under Presets) that the paper was PhotoPaper and it printed fine (kind of slow), but it did print on the card stock with no jam or problem. -- Just FYI, in case you are having trouble with card stock. I did this on Mac, but the same should work in Windows.
The Printer also has card readers and a USB port, when you put a device in their, the printer also shares the device with the network so you can find the printer in Network (or under Shared in Mac Finder). If it is not showing up you can use COMMAND + K and enter SMB://[printer IP] and login as Guest and the printer will mount the memory device.
I am happy with the printer and have the highest hopes on the Ink yield and longevity of the printer! I will update you on the ink as soon as it runs out (which hopefully will not be for a while :)
UPDATE: The fax lights staying on (mentioned earlier), has fixed itslef. Now The Fax lights have turned off and now turn on only when opening the fax menu or on applications that have text input. Once I restarted the printer the fax lights corrected themselves. -- Just FYI.
Update (April 21), it has been about 3 month and I wanted to add that after regular printing (school papers, receipts, taxes) that the printer still shows that all ink cartridges are all full (you can barely tell that the levels have changed), the ink usage on this printer makes it amazing! I will let you know when I eventually have to buy ink, which may be well into the next year at the current rate!!!! -- Just FYI!!!
HP needs to change their policy and printer software to allow bypass of this disabling feature. It is obvious, they want to sell you more ink at their outrageously exorbitant prices. I cannot recommend this printer and doubt I will purchase any more HP printers in the future.
Update 3/16: Generic ink will cause printer to malfunction. I believe HP purposely designed this printer so you are forced to buy their overpriced ink cartridges ($140-160 for the set). I will be looking elsewhere for another printer.
I've also noticed with past printers that the low-power mode never seems to work right. On my old J6450 I had to hit the X button a few times, and then 20 minutes later it would finally go into low power mode, and if I didn't do that it would stay on until I did. The same goes for the newer 6500A Plus, which I received as a gift and then returned because it was shorting out my DSL service. That one would not go into low power mode at all whenever my wireless was in use, and the display stayed on...just like the J6450. But this 8600Pro printer, the low power mode actually WORKS, and you can even set it for daily time intervals, or simply set it to go into low power mode after your choice of 10 or 15 minutes. Works every time, and that's good because it has a nice display and when the unit goes into low power mode the display turns off. Just tap the the touch screen to turn it back on, or print from your computer and it of course comes back up automatically.
The touch screen display is nice and big, and shows big icons. Easy to read, easy to use, and the entire display is NICELY ADJUSTABLE so that you can read it standing above the printer, or directly flat with the front of the printer if it's higher-up on the top shelf of your desk. The latter works great for me, because with both the other printers I had to keep forcing myself upward just to see the display, which was annoying because they weren't adjustable and I still couldn't read them easily due to the nonadjustable, and upward angle of the LCD.
Double printing works great, either right from the computer or from the flatbed scanner. It's amazing how it works, too. You ask the printer to do double sided copy by a few simple selections on the touch screen display, put the first side in the flatbed scanner and then start the copy, it then scans and prints that first side...holding the paper in for the other side, then it asks you to turn the sheet over to scan the other side. From there it holds BOTH sides in memory, so if you previously asked the printer to do several copies, you don't have to keep re-scanning each side....it will print out however many copies you chose, on both sides, automatically. Very nice, because that saves the scanning bulb from being over-used.
And now for the Pièce de résistance: You can add another paper shelf to this printer! For YEARS I have been wanting a home printer that would have two paper shelves, one for paper and the other for envelopes, because I always prefer to print my envelopes rather than write them out by hand. You have to purchase the second tray separately, but I have every intention of getting one. It saves so much time, because you don't have to keep pulling the paper out, replacing it with envelopes, going back to the computer to print them out, and then going back to the printer to put the paper back in. That might help you burn some extra calories, but it gets on my nerves when I have to do that multiple times per day.
So in all, I'm very satisfied with this printer. Definitely the best printer I've ever purchased.
