Vindsval, the visionary mastermind of Blut Aus Nord, returns to his black metal roots with Memoria Vetusta III: Saturnian Poetry, planting the sound back on the Earth after forays into space on recent albums such as  777: Cosmosophy  and the previous entry in this series,  Memoria Vetusta II: Dialogue With the Stars  (see my review).

This is not raw, rough black metal though. It is finely crafted with a huge, warm sound and majestic melodies conveyed by massed guitars. The relentless drums drive the songs forward with powerful momentum, and the screaming black metal vocals are placed over the top, rather than submerged as on MVII: Dialogue.

The cover art by Kristian Necrolord Wahlin is superb, a dark Tolkien-esque landscape. The impeccable 12-page booklet includes lyrics, some in French, and some in English. Included are poems by Baudelaire and Verlaine.

Here is an English lyric:

"By Her...
By Me,
I understand a being absolutely infinite,
a substance consisting of an infinity of attributes,
of which each one expresses an eternal and infinite essence.

And from the One,
substance of all things,
emanates the Divine."

One of the best metal albums of 2014, without a doubt!

Continues in the more prog direction of 777 Cosmophony. This album even features a human drummer. While Vindsval's compositional skills continue to expand on tunes like Tellus Mater and Forhist, the album is further away from the industrial and avant-garde roots of The Work which Transforms God and other earlier albums. This is the reason for the four stars as Vindsval continues to risk morphing to a sound that is much more of a generic post-black metal / shoegaze vibe than the crushing blackness of tunes like Inner Metal Cage or Epitome VIII

On digère ça, on réécoute.
