Vindsval, the visionary mastermind of Blut Aus Nord, returns to his black metal roots with Memoria Vetusta III: Saturnian Poetry, planting the sound back on the Earth after forays into space on recent albums such as
777: Cosmosophy
and the previous entry in this series,
Memoria Vetusta II: Dialogue With the Stars
(see my review).
This is not raw, rough black metal though. It is finely crafted with a huge, warm sound and majestic melodies conveyed by massed guitars. The relentless drums drive the songs forward with powerful momentum, and the screaming black metal vocals are placed over the top, rather than submerged as on MVII: Dialogue.
The cover art by Kristian Necrolord Wahlin is superb, a dark Tolkien-esque landscape. The impeccable 12-page booklet includes lyrics, some in French, and some in English. Included are poems by Baudelaire and Verlaine.
Here is an English lyric:
"By Her...
By Me,
I understand a being absolutely infinite,
a substance consisting of an infinity of attributes,
of which each one expresses an eternal and infinite essence.
And from the One,
substance of all things,
emanates the Divine."
One of the best metal albums of 2014, without a doubt!
