I ended up reinstalling the gasket using a youtube user's clever ziptie "redneck" hack (it worked for the outer spring and partially for the inner one). . .
Bottom line . . . the tool is a joke, the inner spring design is a joke and . . . LG support is misnamed . . . How can it be called customer support when customer's aren't supported? May I suggest "LG customer non-support" as a more appropriate naming convention?

Tools absolutely needed:
1) this overpriced tool
2) needle nose pliers
3) headlamp
4) plastic or wooden kitchen spoons
5) something about 5x5x10 (maybe a cardboard box). I used a big flashlight since it was handy and the right size.
1) Once you’ve got the rubber gasket in position, put the wire clamp into position with the spring on the right lower side, about 4 o’clock.
2) shove some of the kitchen spoons around the gasket to essentially immobilize the wire clamp. If you don’t do this you will spend a lot of energy repositioning the clamp which will increase your frustration.
3) stick tool #5 up into the top left between the barrel and the washer frame. This will push/isolate the right side of the barrel outward and make it easier for you to access the wire clamp. If you don’t do this you will fight the moving barrel.
4) place and turn on your headlamp
5) hook the left prong around the loop of the top clamp
6) hook the right prong around the spring below the loop. You need to NOT hook into the loop.
7) with your left hand tighten the clamp which will bring the spring/clamp hook closer together
8) with needle nose pliers in right hand, grab the spring below the loop on the spring and the use the overpriced lower tool prong as a leverage point to make the last quarter inch pull and connect the spring to the hook. (Once you get the motion of this it’s very simple and does not require a lot of force)
And, yes, like many reviews before this one, this tool does not close the distance enough. The intention is to insert the tool between the wire loop above the wire end and one end of the spring. Seems simple enough, but the tool does not close enough (as pointed out by others). Swell. ANSWER: Insert the tool just ABOVE the wire loop, which gives you another quarter inch of compression -- just enough! Keep in mind, this adds risk of slippage since you're NOT INSIDE the loop. Keep your fingers pressing the tool against the wire as you're doing this. It never slipped for me, but I see how it could. So, with the help of my son, he was able to redirect the wire end through the spring loop while I was compressing the spring with the tool. It wasn't easy and we took a break several times to rethink and re-energize. Good luck! It may take several tries, but you'll get it!
So here was how I did it: After removing the front panel, I used two sets of pliers to pull the spring loop onto the hook. I wasn't able to achieve this with just the two pliers though. It was too difficult to grip the small parts of the coil. So I used the needle nose pliers to grab the neck of the spring loop, and I hooked the loop on the hook end (the one you're supposed to use the tool with) and pulled the hook with the regular pliers. This was I was able to grip and pull enough to get them together. Just be sure before you start this process the entire coil is in the back groove of the boot where it's supposed to be. As for everything else, I found youtube videos that walked through removal and replacement of the boot/gasket as well as how to remove the front panel.

It's a really expensive single purpose tool - but it does make the job a bit safer than some of the hacks I've seen posted.
