First of all, I've been a huge fan of JD and I've actually been kind of bummed by JD 2014 and 2015 content wise.
So obviously, I'm going to like this game BUT I was pleasantly surprised by how much I ended up liking it! It's a new favourite, that is for sure. Lots of replay-ability, and a good majority of the choreographies are fun. It's actually kinda difficult to decide on which ones I want to dance to in my free time.
Now let's get critical:
I honestly thought this game was rated T. Being a visually impaired adult I don't really bother to look at ratings anymore, and JD games have generally been safe to play around impressionable children.
Weeeelll. . . while certain words are censored, you can still get a pretty clear picture of what is going on when you listen to the lyrics, be it sex or objectifying people.
It could fly over a kids' head much like some of Aqua's songs and "Cottoneye Joe" did when we were little, but I'm not totally sure about that.
I, for one, am uncomfortable having some of the tracks play around kids, whether they understand it or not.
I would advise giving the songs a listen (go to youtube or something), before getting this if it's for a child or if you're planning to play in a family setting. Decide from there!
Last point is about the "Unlimited" pass. I think it's great because not all JD games are on the WiiU, and so I was looking forward to playing some old favourites! Fortunately this game comes with a 48 hr free trial! Yay! A better option, I think, than getting the "Gold Edition" and then finding out you've got issues, or don't like it as much as you thought you would.
Problems I ran into, probably due to rural internet:
Buffering in the middle of a song
Graphics quality would get reeeeally low sometimes, to the point you can't see what is happening (but on the upside, when quality would go up, I could see the older songs got remastered! No more fuzzy dancers! )
Loading seemed to take FOREVER . . . sometimes I just quit waiting
Coming to think of it, I'm not sure if this is a slow 'net issue, or an ubisoft server issue. . . but yeah. Free trial so you can find out. :')
Update 22/03/2016:
I ended up getting the unlimited pass and I've really enjoyed it for the past two months.
New songs get added every so often. Some oldies and at least one newbie.
I noticed the connection is the worst over the weekend and in the evenings. . . which is probably when everyone else is trying to play.
Therefore if you can only play in the evening, you'll likely be dealing with ubisoft's server issues.
If you can play whenever, middle of the day is good. I found mornings to be the best.
It's fun, you can do it with someone else, I think the fact you don't need to buy extra controllers because you can just use your phone is a great idea. (Works with any iphone or android smart phone).
Plus it's a fun way to get your cardio in. I seriously end up sweaty, heart beating and feeling like I went for a great cardio workout after half an hour.
I dont' even care about the points or the moves, it just helps to get you moving and burning some calories.
Fun fun!
Pros
- Same good graphics
-New menu is great
-Not a fan of the new modes but I like that they are there.
- Like the camera recording at the end of each song. Not really an easy sell to guests though (they think it's recorded and uploaded right away or something when it isn't, and is optionally uploaded)
Cons-
-Having people join using your phone, I'm not a fan of. I don't think holding your phone while dancing/swinging around is a good idea at all.
-Still no dance/slow tutorial mode. Would LOVE to see this feature added. Stick figures are sometimes hard to grasp what move is next. I would love an easier way to learn the dances instead of just on the fly.
-Hate the paywall subscription songs being in the menu.
-Had to unlock the Ubisoft coin pay songs on the computer (could not do that on the wiiU even though it suggests you can)
