A Call of Duty Campaign to RememberCall of Duty: Infinite Warfare puts storytelling front and center, in a deeply engaging narrative. It features jaw-dropping set-pieces and blockbuster cinematic moments, while also delivering a gripping portrayal of war that harkens back to the roots of the franchise. Infinity Ward also breaks new ground by thrusting the player into wartime leadership as Captain Reyes, a Tier 1 Special Operations pilot, who takes the helm of the Retribution, one of Earth’s last remaining warships. In a time of unthinkable hardships, Reyes must lead the remnants of coalition forces against a relentless foe in a war that spans our solar system. |
Fighting a Fanatical EnemyThe Settlement Defense Front (SetDef) represents a splinter group of insurgents that broke away from the United Nations Space Alliance during a war of secession, years ago. In the world of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, our planet has been stripped of its natural assets through population growth and industrial expansion. The people of Earth now rely upon colonies throughout the solar system to mine planets and asteroids for necessary fuel and other resources. The SetDef is a fascist power, comprised of brutal and militant radicals, toughened by the extreme conditions of offworld environments. They seek to control those outposts and their wealth, putting a stranglehold on the countries of Earth. After years of uneasy stalemate, diplomatic relations are strained, and it will take only the slightest nudge to lead to full-scale war. |
Gear Up For Intense MultiplayerCall of Duty: Infinite Warfare will feature an evolution of Call of Duty’s movement system with an emphasis on front-line engagement. Maps are designed to further leverage the movement system and immerse players into fast, fun, and frenetic gameplay that players have come to expect from Call of Duty. With its new approach to play, multiplayer will bring innovative gameplay that challenges players to achieve their goals in creative ways based on their specific play style. |

Now on to the reason I give this game 5 stars. Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered is everything you remember is was and more but with time comes those rose-tinted glasses that gloss over the negatives of the game. So first, if you have never played Modern Warfare because you are too young or CoD wasn't your thing at the time, it is a wonderful game that shows the roots of where CoD became the juggernaut of a franchise it is today. This game was the turning point for CoD. If you're like me though and you've played CoD for years and wanted to go back I have some reminders for you that you've probably forgotten.
Okay so to start off reminder martyrdom? It's a perk where upon death your drop a live grenade. Now this is fine if you're a long range person but if you ever get the urge to get closer or "run and gun" this perk will frustrate you till no end. On the topic of grenades, you probably don't remember how overpowered they are, they can be far enough away that the grenade icon barely shows up and you will die. Another thing with grenades you've probably forgotten is that the map design though amazing as it is, is very small and lends itself easily to other players having the Frags x3 perk on and just chucking grenades over buildings or across maps, this is especially frustrating in Search and Destroy (a 1 life per round game mode).
MWR really shows its age in a lot of other ways also, there is a limited selections of weapons, the majority of players will either play with M16A (assault rifle), MP5 (sub-machine gun), or M40A (sniper). Those three are by far the most common weapons used and there are limited number of perks again, there is no pick-10 system either so you can't customize much.
Despite all this however there are a lot of pros, the maps design though small is so phenomenal, this was Infinity Ward at its peak. You don't generally feel cheated out of anything like kills because the balancing is superb and everything has an effective counter.
Raven Software and the other studios tasked with this remastered did alter it, this isn't the same exact game as in 2007. They didn't change the core mechanics, but they did add in calling cards and emblems, you can also get skins for you weapons (these aren't just camos from the original game but actual skins that change the appearance). The underlying theme to keep in mind with the additions is, micro-transactions.
To Long Didn't Read: This game is old and it shows but if you played the original it will make you feel young again.
Now should you buy this game? If you have the extra cash sure, but it isn't worth $70-80 in my opinion. I got mine on a good deal for 50% off that brought the price down to around $40 or so, at that price it is worth it. If you are like so many others and waiting for MWR to release separately, I'd suggest you give up that hope. This again is just my opinion, but with the game bundled already together and them obviously willing to reduce the price to get sales, why would they sell it separate instead of just lowering the overall price? If Activision does the latter it will also artificially boost sales for Infinite Warfare because technically there is only one SKU and it's for Infinite Warfare. Another thing is, if they do release a standalone MWR, what do you think the price will be? $19.99, with Activision that's not happening, $29.99? Maybe... but again I'd doubt it because they know they can get more, so most likely it will go for $39.99 or above while also lowering the price on this edition. So I guess what I'm trying to say is, if the game were $40 for both, would you not buy it even if you don't want IW?
So anyway, I have only been playing the game for about 14 hours or so, and it is all been multiplayer and zombies (yes, I am "that guy") so I will have to limit this review based upon that admittedly minimalist scope. Then again, for the purposes of multiplayer, other than new map packs and maybe a gun or two, it's not like gameplay is bound to change much 6 months from now anyway.
Just as a generalized notion, some people are pissed that COD is still sticking with a futuristic styled game for it's current installment. As for me, I am not bothered by this. If you have such a hangup for historical combat, it's not like there are not a million other games out there to cater to this desire. Some people just like to invent things to bitch about. The good thing about huge development houses like Activation is they have the cash and the talent on board to make virtually any setting spellbindingly glorious as far as environments, characters, physics and graphical detail. Those of you that forked over the money for an S and are rocking 4K TV's will absolutley love the detail, characters and sound. I can say that this is the best yet in that department with absolutley zero hesitation.
Anyone that has played a COD game in the last decade is going to find much is familiar here as far as game types and matchmaking. No need to reinvent the wheel there is fine with me (objective based, death match, etc) but if and when the servers crash you can expect to find me on the COD forums cussing like a drunken sailor. The only game type I don't remember seeing before is "defender" which is pretty much just a rip off of Oddball from the Halo universe minus the skull. I played it a couple of times and am not a fan. It gets boring quick, but you might like it, who knows? The leveling up system and load out possibilities here are also only a minor variation from what we have come to expect. We all know the drill by now, right? Basically you can pick out the people who have no GF and are pushing 30 and still live in Mom's basement by the icon next to their name. At the end of the day, this is a game like all the rest in that if you invest a ton of hours, you will earn competitive advantages over your foes. Casual players are going to be getting owned as always, with controller throws and loud and static filled accusations of cheating and being gay in the lobby afterwards. Gotta love Xbox Live.
Maps are as you would expect, some more open for those that favor ranged play, and some more intimate for those of us that are "rusher" style players. You better get to playing now so you can familiarize yourself as quick as possible. As per normal, there are going to certain maps, and certain sections of some maps that become hotbeds of activity, and the same applies here. Even after 3-4 plays of the same map you are going to quickly see these begin to develop.
Zombies I have not spent a great deal of time with yet, but what little I have has been retarded amounts of fun. Grab a couple of buddies for co-op and cop a case of beer as this is just too much fun. It's one of those multiplayer experiences when you look up at the clock and realize you have been playing for 10 hours straight instead of just an hour. It's radical. I wont give away "plot" spoilers, but it looks like a Back to the Future 2, space age Marty Mcfly kind of thing there. I am guessing they drew upon inspiration from the single player, but since I have not played through it yet I can't comment there. Zombies is always a favorite for many people, especially among the more causal type players, and they will find lots to love here.
At the end of the day, yes, this is "just another COD game", but for all the hatred and vitriol that is launched at this formula, the developers and publishers still manage to rake in record amounts of cash with each new installment. It's either one of those games that we gamers love to hate, or else the vast majority of people out there are just like me: they talk a good game online, but then are waiting in a line from here to China at midnight at their local Gamestop eager to throw down their cash for a copy. Guys, it totally OK to admit that you like playing COD. You are not alone by any stretch of the imagination.

The one additional thing hey did was add new weapons, titles, emblems, etc. You don't get these things for free. So, either you open supply drops and receive the items (if you're lucky), or you spend $$$$ to get them.
