Our now 2 month old had a bad day with lots of crying and fussing, and I checked her temperature. It read 100.4 which is considered a medical emergency for newborns.
Hours later at the hospital, the ER Doctor explained to us that no-touch thermometers are great for adults, but for infants you will get false readings because their faces are flush with blood while, and after crying making it inaccurate.
It’s a nice device, but it’s not for infants.
Top reviews from other countries
Sturdy and well made. It fits comfortably in the hand. The cover to keep the temperature probe clean is a great idea (just make sure you take it off before using.
Features:
Pros: Clear and bright LCD screen which colour codes the temperature green, amber or red for easy when to panic decisions! A no beep mode, for those tykes who have hypersonic hearing when they sleep.
Cons: no Fahrenheit mode only Celsius. This works for me but my wife is more familiar with Fahrenheit so an ability to swap between the two measurements would help.
Operation:
Pros: intuitive design means easy to take the reading at 4am in darkness with your eyes barely open. Can hold it around 5cm away from the forehead so no waking up the little one.
Cons: uses light to take the temperature reading. It's a dull orange/yellow light so hasn't been an issue for us but it depends how sensitive your child will be to light. Because the temperature is measured from the surface of the skin it can vary wildly across the body, even just across the forehead. The instructions state that the reading should be taken from between the persons eyes. We had readings ranging from 37.6 to 38.2!
In conclusion I would recommend this thermometer over those tricky armpit groin ones because its alot easier to use. Also no sticking on the ear- especially useful in those with an ear infection!
Just beware the variation in readings

Found this OK initially when measuring low healthy temperatures, but when a real fever strikes compared to the Braun in ear thermometers there was a difference of up to - 1.8c (in my situation) This may not be typical.
I did not come to any harm as simply how bad I felt (with a later confirmed and dangerous 41c fever) at 4am one morning, some months ago, made me think basic first aid and I headed straight for a lukewarm bath, slowly adding more cold water and staying put in it.
I had to disregard one temperature device giving one reading and another something else and just focus on getting myself cooler slowly, while also getting a Doctor to see me ASAP.
So as I felt terrible and I had already called a Doctor because of how hot and physically weak I was - he immediately put me on really huge doses of antibiotics/antibacterials,confirmed my temperature and I wasn't alone in the home.
Within 6 hours temperature was getting back to normal.
After 5 days treatment I was semi-recovered with a normal temperature.I'd been lucky I had an instinct to cool myself.
Perhaps the differences between our two types of Braun models,The IRT 4520 and this unit were more apparent where the temperature is caused by an infection near to the ear and/or when the lymph nodes in the neck are really hot and inflamed.
The IRT 4520 might have had an advantage because of how it measures temperature and was possibly more accurate because of proximity to the hottest part of my body for my particular illness at the time
It's hard to be sure/wise after the event- as it cannot be simulated, plus I'd hope I am not to go through anything like that again.
As mentioned earlier, the unit could be faulty.
We Used this as a general guide, for times when we didn't want to disturb someone, it had not been bad on 'normalish' temperatures, but if I really wanted feel sure I'd revert back to the in ear model we already were used to.
I think the 'answer' or reading we got from this became a pointer to consult another thermometer when it started to show high/near high or too many different 'conclusions' in a short time frame.
It could be possible some of these aren't getting calibrated correctly and others are fine. Still, at this price(We paid £46.58p) I'd expect them to be getting to everyone pretty much spot on with accuracy.
Checked optics and they were totally clean. You can't actually clean the top internal section as it could damage the unit, even though there's a hole there. There is a second area at he base of the circular sensor area with a flat filter that we wiped with a cotton bud, It didn't seem to make a difference.
I took my temperature with this 3 times in 2 minutes whilst writing this review- I got 36.8c green,37.0c green and 37.5c amber, so you can hopefully understand why I ended up 'on the fence' about ours.
If this device needs to look at infra red heat at the centre on the brow at a very low room brightness to be correct it may not suit every situation people find they need to take a temperature in.
Could be wise to always use the contact to skin method instead of pointing from a short distance in daytime?
Even that last reading could be a should I,shouldn't I check later? situation for some people..
Got the In ear and a bog standard thermometer out and they both read 37.0-37.1c, and they do not vary over 10 minutes at 4 measurements per device. These measurements I'm quite happy are for real.and I'd take no further action.
One reading with my head actually under bed covers (as an experiment to eliminate any ir or general light in the room) with the NTF3000- I got 36.9c touching the skin of my forehead, 36.6 c 5 cm away - so 0.1 c to 0.4 c out compared with the thermoscan in ear model when used at normal body temperature in the dark on the same person within seconds depending on method used.
Cannot test on a fever right now, but I think ours has to go back for servicing under warranty because of the last problems with its fever reading.
*ARRANGED THIS ON THE PHONE WITH THE PEOPLE WHO BRAUN USE FOR REPAIRS LAST WEEK - IF DEVICE COMES BACK FINE- I PROMISE TO RE-RATE*.
Braun Phone staff were helpful and gave me the number of the service agent who looks after the repairs of these.
It is a product made by another manufacturer under licence.
**On 28/08/2015 I received a voucher that will enable me to purchase a new NTF3000 or any other Braun product to the value of £50.
** Photo shows differences at normal healthy temperatures we found in readings between our Braun IRT 4520 and NTF3000 taken at the same time on the same person,Sunday 12/7/15, a day before returning - each unit having new batteries, but the ones that were in were not exhausted.
Note this Device has no memory unction.

The product is very robust and easy to use (ergonomic). Takes two AA sized batteries (included).
With amazon prime the product was delivered approximately 20 hours after the order was placed, in our case by royal mail tracked delivery, with tracking information available one hour after the order was placed. The item arrived undamaged. The packaging itself consists of a windowed cardboard box with the opening edge sealed with a sticker. Inside the thermometer is enclosed in a plastic clamshell and is easily opened. also enclosed is a quick start guide, a more detailed product manual and the aforementioned batteries. There is also a sturdy plastic cap to cover the sensor, which the instructions indicate would be fitted to the unit but which was loose in the box in our case.
The batteries are fitted by removing a slide off plastic door. inside the battery bay is a two position dip switch to select between Celsius or Fahrenheit measurements. The batteries do not come fitted. We were supplied with maxell branded batteries.
after fitting the batteries you can use a sliding switch on the left hand side of the product to select whether you want the product to work silently or issue an audible beep when operating.
on/off operation is via a push button switch on the face of the unit, located just above the Braun logo.
Don't forget to remove the plastic cap that protects the sensor - it simply pushes into place, it's a tension fit, there's no clips to break or anything that would retain the cover in place.
after switching the unit on it's ready for operation immediately, also It can take multiple readings in rapid succession, unlike our in-ear thermometer which for some bizarre reasons requires 30-60 seconds between readings - as the button used to take a reading will start cycling through the memory until a certain amount of time has elapsed.
After switching on you press the large blue temperature button to take a reading, the screen then displays a prompt to place the unit 0-5 cm from the reading site (0 cm being "in contact" with the site) - if the unit is at the appropriate distance then a reading will be taken within 2 seconds. When the button has been pressed a light is projected to illuminate the reading site - it is bright but not unpleasantly so.
I've noticed no difference in readings that were taken second apart on the same person where the unit was in contact with the site, or whether it was at a distance.
When on a backlight on the screen adjusts to one of three colours after taking a reading;
green to indicate a normal temperature.
amber to indicate a borderline-fever temperature.
red to indicate a fever temperature.
It Is important to note that the backlight colouring is based on temperature norms for an individual of age 3 years to adult - norms for babies are different to adults. I have not read the manual in any great depth to ascertain whether the differences are explained in the literature but this information Is readily available online.
Also it is important to note, as explained in the literature, that no warning Is provided for a hypothermic temperature (low temperature) - however if such a reading is detected the backlight will remain off when displaying a reading.
Additionally if there is an error in taking a reading an error warning Is displayed and the backlight turns red.
I cannot think of any negative aspects which should be mentioned.
An additional benefit of this unit over an in-ear thermometer is the absence of a requirement for ongoing costs in the form of lens filters and the ability to prevent cross-infection through the facility to use the unit in a non-contact mode.
In summary this product Is robust, easy to use and comes with appropriate guidance to be utilised correctly. I would definitely consider it a worthwhile candidate for anyone in the market for a thermometer for use in the home environment
