Arranger-composer Mike Leander was a popular face on Britain's musical scene of the 1960s and '70s, and was a successful song writer who had his material recorded by singers such as Engelbert Humperdinck. He also enjoyed success as a recording artist in his own right, and the two albums featured on this Vocalion release are good examples of his musical skill. Subtitled 'The Summer Sound of Mike Leander', 'Cool Drinks and Warm Company' certainly lives up to that sobriquet, being as bright, breezy and carefree as you could wish. Mike Leander works his magic on a charming set of melodies drawn from a variety of sources. They include Desafinado, Fly Me to the Moon, My Kind of Girl, Goldfinger and others. 1965's 'The Folk Hits' features various folk-orientated melodies, all treated to modern arrangements courtesy of Mike Leander. Titles include Donovan's Colours and Catch the Wind, Bob Dylan's It Ain't Me Babe, The Times they are a Changin' and Mr Tambourine Man, the Rolling Stones' As Tears Go By and more. 'The Folk Hits' was originally released only in mono, and Vocalion present it in stereo for the first time.
