What here is called Atoms of Light was first published in fourteen installments during May 1906 by the Montevidean newspaper La Democracia. Taken together, these aphoristic vignettes in poetic prose could be read as the transcript of a Christian sermon, or an epistle addressed to an entire congregation, on love. The source text is pages 729 to 747 of Poesía completa y prosas, a 1998 critical edition of the complete works of Julio Herrera y Reissig (1875-1910).
