Fish oil has been known to have benefits for over a thousand years, and the science is finally starting to back up the beneficial claims. Fish oil’s recent popularity stems from the fact that it contains omega fatty acids. But long before anyone knew what an omega fatty acid was, people still turned to fish oil to enhance their health.
The Vikings were among the first recorded peoples to harvest fish oil, primarily from cod. Cod livers were suspended over a pot of boiling water, and the heat from the steam cooked the liver, causing the oil within to drip from the liver into the pan below. There, the oil floated atop the water until it was skimmed off by the cook. This oil was considered a valuable supplement to the Vikings’ diet. The oil was referred to as “the gold of the sea” by these people and was revered for its healing powers and as a way to enhance energy and physical strength.
The Romans also believed in the health benefits of fish oil. Garum, a type of sauce made by fermenting fish, was used both as a condiment and for medicinal purposes. The Romans understood that garum could be used to treat a wide variety of injuries and illnesses, from constipation to dysentery. Garum did not die out with the Roman Empire, either. Cistercian monks kept the recipe alive, gradually developing today’s Colatura di Alici, a nutrient-rich fish sauce that remains an integral part of coastal Italian dishes.
